Sypris Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SYPR) shares gained 4.6% in premarket trading on Thursday after the company secured a contract to manufacture power processing units for a next-generation satellite constellation.
The award was received by subsidiary Sypris Electronics from an unnamed space technology company and covers engineering support, material procurement and high-volume production. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
Production scheduled to run through mid-2028
Work under the contract is expected to begin with protoflight and pilot production during the third quarter of 2026, before moving into phased deliveries of flight-ready units through the middle of 2028.
As part of the programme, Sypris will establish and qualify the high-volume manufacturing capabilities required to produce electronic power assemblies across engineering, verification and flight configurations.
The company will also develop the necessary production infrastructure, source specialised materials suitable for space applications and carry out assembly, integration and testing.
Power systems to support spacecraft operations
The electronic units will be used in space systems requiring reliable power regulation and control for spacecraft functions in orbital environments.
The contract therefore expands Sypris Electronics’ involvement in advanced space hardware while providing a multi-year production programme extending into 2028.
Mike Sedgwick, Vice President and General Manager of Sypris Electronics, said the company’s investments in automation, advanced testing processes and high-volume manufacturing capabilities have strengthened its ability to support spacecraft architectures across both commercial and government missions.
Sypris expands exposure to space manufacturing
Sypris Electronics provides engineering, design and manufacturing services for customers operating across the communications, defence and space industries.
The latest award adds to the company’s space-sector manufacturing activities and demonstrates its ability to move projects from engineering and qualification through to higher-volume flight-unit production.
Investors responded positively to the announcement, sending Sypris Solutions shares higher before Thursday’s market open despite the company not disclosing the financial value of the contract.
