Micron unveils $10 billion U.S. research lab focused on memory and AI

Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) has announced the creation of Micron Research Labs, a new U.S.-based research institution backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade.

Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, the initiative will concentrate on next-generation memory technologies, advanced memory and computing architectures, semiconductor packaging and manufacturing. Micron describes the project as the first dedicated memory research hub of its kind in the United States.

Boise facility to house hundreds of researchers

Micron plans to break ground on a purpose-built facility in Boise in 2027, with the site expected to accommodate hundreds of researchers.

The wider $10 billion commitment will also support partnerships with universities, satellite research laboratories around the world and collaborations across the semiconductor ecosystem.

Micron said the initiative is intended to bring its own researchers together with specialists from academia, government and industry. Research collaborators identified by the company include Stanford University, the University of Texas at Austin and the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre, known as imec.

“With a planned $10 billion investment in Micron Research Labs, we are looking around the corner to the memory and compute systems the future will demand,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology.

Investment targets next generation of AI infrastructure

The research programme comes as increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence systems create greater demand for high-performance memory and more tightly integrated computing architectures.

By focusing on memory, compute systems, packaging and semiconductor manufacturing, Micron aims to develop technologies capable of supporting the increasingly demanding infrastructure required by future AI applications.

The company said the $10 billion investment is separate from its previously announced commitment of more than $250 billion towards U.S. manufacturing and research and development. Micron has said that broader programme is expected to support more than 90,000 jobs.

U.S. officials and semiconductor executives back initiative

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick welcomed the announcement, saying the investment “will strengthen American innovation, create hundreds of jobs and ensure memory never limits innovation.”

Executives from Nvidia, Apple, Applied Materials and Lam Research also issued statements supporting the project and highlighting their longstanding relationships with Micron.

Micron describes itself as the only U.S.-based developer and manufacturer of leading-edge memory technology. The semiconductor company has accumulated more than 62,000 patents over its history.

The establishment of Micron Research Labs further expands the company’s domestic investment strategy while positioning memory technology as a central component of the next generation of AI and advanced computing systems.
