Generac Holdings (NYSE:GNRC) shares surged 33.7% in pre-market trading after the company announced a long-term agreement to supply industrial backup generators for Amazon’s global data centre infrastructure.
Initial deliveries under the agreement are expected to total $2.4 billion across 2027 and 2028, while the overall purchase target could reach $8 billion over the contract’s lifetime.
As part of the arrangement, Amazon received a warrant allowing it to acquire up to approximately 1.69 million Generac shares at an exercise price of around $200.93 per share. The warrant represents nearly 3% of Generac’s outstanding shares.
Analysts Respond to Amazon Agreement
Cantor Fitzgerald reiterated its Overweight rating and $333 price target, describing the agreement as Generac’s most significant data centre announcement to date.
Barclays maintained its Equal Weight rating and $278 price target, while Wells Fargo reaffirmed its Overweight recommendation and $280 price target.
Wells Fargo also indicated that Generac appeared largely exempt from a Trump administration executive order targeting foreign-sourced electricity grid equipment. According to the bank, this could reduce regulatory uncertainty surrounding the company’s Baudouin engine line.
The agreement provides Generac with a substantial new source of potential revenue as demand for backup power equipment increases alongside data centre development.
Before the announcement, Generac’s data centre order backlog stood at approximately $1.35 billion. The Amazon agreement adds to the company’s existing commitments, although the full $8 billion purchase target is not guaranteed.
Shares Advance Despite Higher US Interest Rates
Generac’s share price reaction followed the Federal Reserve’s decision on 16 September to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75%–4.00%.
The unanimous decision marked the central bank’s first rate increase since 2023 and reflected concerns about persistently elevated inflation.
Broader US equity markets nevertheless recorded gains, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones each rising 0.7%, while the Nasdaq advanced 0.8%.
Generac’s substantially larger pre-market increase followed the disclosure of the Amazon agreement and the subsequent analyst commentary.
The contract extends the company’s involvement in data centre infrastructure and provides visibility into expected generator deliveries through 2028, with the possibility of additional purchases over the longer term.
