Roche (USOTC:RHHBY) plans to develop autonomous artificial intelligence-driven laboratories as part of its research and development activities, the Swiss pharmaceutical company said Monday.
Aviv Regev, executive vice president of Genentech Research and Early Development, said Roche is pursuing “AI independence” in research and development and has started constructing autonomous AI-driven laboratories.
The initiative forms part of Roche’s broader use of AI and computational technologies across its drug research and development operations.
Roche Redirects R&D Savings to Programs and Productivity
Roche said approximately 2 billion Swiss francs of savings from research and development will be redirected to programs and productivity initiatives by 2026.
The company is targeting the introduction of up to 20 new molecular entities to the market by 2030.
Roche also reported that its Phase III clinical trial success rate increased to more than 80% in 2026 year to date, compared with 65% in 2025.
AI Contributes to Pipeline Decisions
Regev said 40% of pipeline decisions made between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the second quarter of 2026 included a tracked contribution from AI or computational methods.
Roche said it remains on track for its Target Nexus AI tool to contribute to 80% of research portfolio decisions by the end of 2026.
The company has also recently opened its Boston Innovation Center, where part of the work will focus on applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in drug development.
