U.S. private-sector employment increased by more than expected in September, according to data released by payroll processor ADP on Wednesday.
Private employers added 90,000 jobs during the month, exceeding economists’ forecast for an increase of 70,000.
The latest figures also showed an acceleration in job creation compared with August.
August Employment Growth Revised Lower
ADP revised the increase in private-sector employment for August down to 36,000 jobs.
The previous month’s gain had originally been reported at 38,000 jobs.
September’s increase was therefore 54,000 jobs higher than the revised August figure and 20,000 above economists’ expectations.
ADP Reports Rebound in Job Creation
The September data followed three months of slower employment growth, according to ADP.
ADP Chief Economist Dr. Nela Richardson said the latest figures showed a recovery in hiring alongside continued wage growth.
“It’s a strong report,” Richardson said. “After a three-month slowdown, job creation rebounded and pay growth remained solid.”
The latest ADP figures provide an additional measure of U.S. labour market conditions, showing stronger private-sector job creation in September than economists had forecast.
