The US casual dining industry has demonstrated greater resilience in 2026 than investors may recognise, according to Evercore ISI, although recent trends suggest spending has begun to moderate among higher-income consumers.
In a research note published on Friday, the investment firm said restaurant performance had remained relatively stable throughout the year, despite economic uncertainty and pressure on household spending.
However, Evercore identified a recent slowdown in the segment, which it attributed partly to changing behaviour among consumers earning more than $100,000 annually.
The analysts suggested that higher petrol prices and concerns surrounding interest rates, housing and financial markets were influencing spending decisions among wealthier households.
Despite these developments, Evercore maintained a constructive view of the casual dining sector and reiterated its preference for Texas Roadhouse (NASDAQ:TXRH) and Brinker International (NYSE:EAT).
Higher-Income Consumers Show Signs of Spending Caution
Evercore’s assessment was based on findings from its Restaurant Insight Monitor (RIM), which tracks consumer and industry trends across the restaurant sector.
The research indicated that casual dining had performed better than broader market sentiment might suggest, although activity had softened more recently.
According to Evercore, the slowdown appears particularly connected to consumers with annual incomes exceeding $100,000.
This group may be responding to a combination of higher fuel costs and economic uncertainty, including developments in interest rates, residential property markets and equity prices.
Changes in spending patterns among higher-income households are significant for casual dining operators, which depend on discretionary expenditure from customers choosing to eat outside the home.
While these consumers generally have greater financial resources than lower-income households, their restaurant spending can still be affected by concerns about the wider economic outlook.
Evercore’s findings suggest that recent weakness may reflect a more cautious approach to discretionary purchases rather than a broader deterioration in demand across the restaurant industry.
Inflation and Economic Uncertainty Could Influence Recovery
Evercore said the timing of a renewed improvement in casual dining trends would likely depend on inflation-related developments and a reduction in uncertainty surrounding the upcoming US elections.
The firm identified rising petrol prices as one factor influencing consumer sentiment, alongside concerns about borrowing costs and the housing market.
Higher energy prices can reduce the amount of disposable income available for discretionary spending, while changes in interest rates may affect household finances and confidence.
Uncertainty in financial markets can also influence consumer behaviour, particularly among households with significant investment exposure.
Evercore suggested that restaurant spending could recover as these pressures ease and the election period passes.
The analysts also indicated that trading conditions might improve during October for reasons beyond the broader economic environment, although the research note did not identify specific factors behind that possibility.
The firm’s outlook therefore remains cautiously positive, with the pace of any recovery dependent on consumer confidence and wider economic conditions.
Texas Roadhouse and Brinker International Remain Preferred Stocks
Despite the recent moderation in consumer activity, Evercore maintained its favourable assessment of Texas Roadhouse and Brinker International.
Texas Roadhouse operates a network of casual dining restaurants, while Brinker International owns restaurant brands including Chili’s Grill & Bar and Maggiano’s Little Italy.
Both companies are exposed to changes in US consumer spending and restaurant demand, making industry traffic and sales trends important considerations for investors.
Evercore’s continued preference for the two companies suggests that the analysts remain positive about their positioning within the casual dining market.
However, the research note did not provide updated price targets or announce changes to investment ratings for either stock.
It also did not include company-specific earnings revisions or detailed financial forecasts.
The comments instead reflected Evercore’s broader assessment of industry conditions and its existing preferences within the restaurant sector.
Restaurant Industry Trends May Be Stronger Than Market Expectations
The findings were published in a research note titled “Restaurant Images”, which examined the state of the US consumer and recent developments in casual dining.
Evercore argued that the sector’s performance during 2026 had been more resilient than investors might appreciate.
Although recent signs of weakness have emerged, the firm did not characterise the slowdown as evidence of a sustained downturn.
Instead, its analysis suggested that changes in consumer sentiment, particularly among higher earners, could be contributing to a temporary moderation in restaurant spending.
The research note did not disclose specific industry sales growth figures or customer traffic data, limiting the ability to quantify the extent of the recent slowdown.
Nevertheless, Evercore’s assessment highlights the importance of monitoring consumer behaviour alongside economic indicators when evaluating restaurant operators.
For investors, upcoming trading updates from casual dining companies may provide further evidence of whether recent softness is continuing or whether demand begins to strengthen during October.
Evercore’s outlook remains supportive of the sector, with Texas Roadhouse and Brinker International among its preferred names, although inflation, fuel prices and consumer confidence remain important factors for the industry’s near-term performance.
