In a significant boost for European critical mineral independence, HyProMag’s rare earths magnet recycling facility in Pforzheim, Germany, has been officially designated as a strategic project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). The status grants the facility—majority-owned by Mkango Magnetic Materials —expedited permitting and improved access to financing, bolstering its integration into Europe’s industrial, tech and defense supply chains.
The Pforzheim site, currently undergoing commissioning, is engineered to generate 100 tonnes per year of recycled neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets and specialized alloys utilizing proprietary processing technology. Operations are structured to scale to 350 tonnes annually, with future planning evaluating a potential expansion up to 750 tonnes.
According to Friday’s news release, discussions with potential customers for recycled NdFeB alloy powders and finished magnets are ongoing alongside the operational ramp-up.
The recognition represents the third CRMA selection for Mkango projects, following earlier 2025 designations for the Songwe Hill rare earths development in Malawi and the Pulawy separation facility in Poland.
