US Stocks Set for Muted Open as Investors Assess Inflation Data and Technology Sector Volatility: Dow Jones, S&P, Nasdaq, Wall Street

US stock futures pointed to a broadly unchanged opening on Friday as investors assessed recent market volatility, stronger-than-expected inflation figures and the outlook for technology shares.

Wall Street recovered sharply during Thursday’s session after initially extending Wednesday’s technology-led sell-off. The Nasdaq rebounded from its lowest intraday level in almost a month, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached its highest closing level in a month.

Despite the recovery, futures suggested a cautious start to Friday’s trading, with investors continuing to monitor Treasury yields and expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate policy.

Wall Street Recovers Following Technology Sell-Off

US equities experienced substantial fluctuations during the week, beginning with relatively subdued trading before technology shares came under pressure on Wednesday.

The selling continued into Thursday’s opening session, pushing the Nasdaq to its lowest intraday level in nearly a month.

However, buying interest emerged as the session progressed, allowing all three major US indices to finish higher.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 556.21 points, or 1.1%, to close at 52,177.69, supported by gains in Nike (NYSE:NKE), Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) and Home Depot (NYSE:HD).

The S&P 500 advanced 25.12 points, or 0.3%, to 7,744.06.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite recovered from earlier losses to finish 20.16 points, or 0.1%, higher at 26,713.03.

The rebound followed a period of selling pressure linked to renewed concerns about valuations and investment expectations in the artificial intelligence sector.

Federal Reserve Chair Highlights Economic Significance of AI

Technology stocks may receive some support from comments by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok.

Warsh described artificial intelligence as “the most profound economic transformation of a lifetime”, highlighting its potential long-term implications for the US and global economies.

His remarks addressed the broader economic importance of AI at a time when investors have been reassessing the outlook for companies associated with the technology.

However, Warsh did not provide specific guidance on upcoming Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.

Investors therefore remain focused on economic data and market expectations for the central bank’s next policy announcement.

US Producer Price Inflation Accelerates to 6.3%

Recent inflation figures have complicated the outlook for monetary policy.

The US Labor Department reported that its producer price index for final demand increased by 1.3% in September, following an upwardly revised 0.5% rise in August.

Economists had expected a monthly increase of 0.5%.

On an annual basis, producer price inflation accelerated to 6.3% from an upwardly revised 5.6% in August, exceeding market expectations.

Additional data released on Friday showed that US import and export prices also increased substantially more than economists had forecast in September.

Despite the stronger inflation readings, US stock futures remained relatively unchanged following the latest report.

According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, market expectations continued to indicate that the Federal Reserve would leave interest rates unchanged at its forthcoming policy meeting later in October.

Treasury Yields Fall to Three-Week Low

Thursday’s recovery in US equities coincided with a sharp decline in Treasury yields.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note fell to its lowest level in three weeks, despite the stronger-than-expected producer price inflation figures.

Lower bond yields can support equity valuations by reducing borrowing costs and the discount rates applied to future corporate earnings.

The decline may have contributed to renewed buying interest following the earlier weakness in technology shares.

However, the persistence of inflationary pressures remains an important consideration for investors assessing the future direction of interest rates.

Gold, Airlines and Housing Stocks Lead Sector Recovery

Several sectors recorded substantial gains during Thursday’s session.

Gold mining shares advanced alongside the price of the precious metal, lifting the NYSE Arca Gold Bugs Index by 4.7%.

The increase followed the index’s decline to its lowest closing level in more than two months during the previous session.

Airline stocks also recovered, with the NYSE Arca Airline Index rising 3.8% after reaching a six-month closing low on Wednesday.

Housing-related equities posted strong gains, pushing the Philadelphia Housing Sector Index up 3.6%.

Biotechnology, healthcare and pharmaceutical stocks also attracted buying interest.

However, the recovery was not uniform across the market.

Computer hardware shares remained under pressure, with the NYSE Arca Computer Hardware Index declining 2.5% to its lowest closing level in well over a month.

Investors Await Direction Following Volatile Sessions

Friday’s relatively flat futures suggested that investors were taking a more cautious approach after the sharp market movements of the previous two sessions.

Thursday’s recovery demonstrated renewed buying interest across several sectors, although technology stocks continued to face uncertainty following the recent sell-off.

The stronger inflation data also raised questions about the outlook for US monetary policy, even as market expectations continued to favour unchanged interest rates at the Federal Reserve’s next meeting.

Investors will be monitoring Treasury yields, technology sector performance and further economic developments for indications of the market’s near-term direction.
