Sylvamo Shares Jump Nearly 12% as Q3 Earnings Beat Estimates and Company Plans European Business Sale

Sylvamo Corporation (NYSE:SLVM) shares surged 11.9% after the paper manufacturer reported third-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings above Wall Street expectations, despite revenue falling short of forecasts. The company also announced a potential sale of its European operations as part of a strategy to streamline its business.

Adjusted earnings reached $1.33 per share, exceeding analysts’ consensus estimate of $1.22. Revenue declined 3% year over year to $645 million, compared with $662 million in the third quarter of 2025, and was below the market forecast of $835.43 million.

The company has classified its European business as discontinued operations, meaning its current financial results reflect continuing operations excluding Europe.

Sylvamo Reports Strong Profitability Despite Lower Revenue

Sylvamo recorded net income from continuing operations of $85 million, equivalent to $2.13 per diluted share, representing a net income margin of 13%.

Adjusted EBITDA from continuing operations reached $128 million, with a margin of 20%.

The company’s quarterly performance benefited from $25 million in favourable pricing and product mix changes, primarily reflecting previously announced paper price increases.

Additionally, planned maintenance outage costs decreased by $38 million, providing further support to profitability.

These improvements were partially offset by $6 million in higher input and transportation expenses.

Sylvamo generated $70 million in operating cash flow and $16 million in free cash flow during the quarter.

Company Moves Toward Sale of European Operations

Sylvamo announced that it had entered into a put option agreement concerning the proposed sale of its European business to Midas Atlantic Partners, working alongside The Najafi Companies.

The potential transaction would allow Sylvamo to concentrate more closely on its remaining operations and direct resources toward improving financial and operational performance.

Chief Executive Officer John Sims highlighted the strategic rationale behind the proposed divestiture.

“We believe this potential transaction represents a significant strategic development for both our European operations and Sylvamo,” Sims said.

“Following the proposed sale, Sylvamo would become a more focused business, better positioned to invest in its operations, improve performance and pursue operational excellence.”

The company has already classified the European business as discontinued operations in its financial reporting, reflecting the proposed change in its operating structure.

Sylvamo Maintains Shareholder Returns

Alongside its quarterly financial results and strategic developments, Sylvamo confirmed a dividend of $0.45 per share, which was paid on October 16.

The distribution reflects the company’s continued commitment to returning capital to shareholders while managing its operations and evaluating the proposed European divestiture.

The company’s operating cash generation also provides financial flexibility as it pursues its strategic priorities.

Investors Respond to Earnings Beat and Strategic Restructuring

Sylvamo’s 11.9% share price increase followed stronger-than-expected adjusted earnings and the announcement of its potential European business sale.

Although revenue declined and missed analyst estimates, improved pricing, lower maintenance costs and solid operating margins supported quarterly profitability.

The proposed disposal could simplify Sylvamo’s business structure and allow management to focus investment on its continuing operations.

Investors will monitor progress on the European transaction, paper pricing trends and the company’s ability to sustain profitability and cash generation in the coming quarters.
